Barnsley are an English football club based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. They are nicknamed the Tykes, or the Reds (their kit colour is traditionally red) and were founded in 1887 as Barnsley St. Peters. They joined the football league in 1898 and were second division strugglers for the first 10 years of their league career, due in part to money issues. Barnsley have the dubious honour of being the club who have spent the most seasons in English football's second tier.
The club's only FA Cup was won in 1912, when they beat West Brom in a replay. A notable former player of Barnsley, Tommy Taylor, a prolific goalscorer for the side in the early 1950s, went on to become one of Manchester United's league title winners who were tragically killed in the Munich air disaster. His transfer from Barnsley to Man United was made for a then world record fee of £29,999. |
