Birmingham City Football Club is an English professional football club based in Birmingham, surprisingly. Formed in 1875 under the name Small Heath Alliance, they became simply Small Heath in 1888 then Birmingham F.C. in 1905, before finally settling pm Birmingham City F.C., which they have been named since 1943. At the end of the 2008–09 season, they were promoted from the Football League Championship as runners up to spend their sixth season in the Premier League.
Small Heath, later to become Birmingham City, were not only founder members of the Second Division in English football, but also the first ever winners. Their history is bereft of major trophies, apart from the League Cup in 1963, which, for a club of such rich heritage and history, is a real shame. The '63 Cup triumph was particularly sweet as it was won against bitter rivals Aston Villa, 3-1 on aggregate. |
