Blackpool Football Club are an English professional football club from the Lancashire seaside town of Blackpool, who were founded in 1887. They joined the football league in 1986, but were relegated to non-league football for the 1899-1900 season - their only season spent outside the football league. Post-war, Blackpool were a very strong side- they supplied many players to the English national team, and competed in 3 Wembley cup finals in a 6 year period.
Blackpool are perhaps best known for the part they played in the 1953 FA Cup final. This was known as the 'Matthews Final', because of the performance of Sir Stanley Matthews (the only footballer to be knighted while still playing) in winning the game. Blackpool trailed by 3 goals to 1 against Bolton Wanderers leading into the closing stages of the game, before winning 4-3, thanks in no small part to Sir Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen, who scored a hat-trick. |
