Cardiff City are one of only two Welsh clubs to be playing in the English football league (the other being Swansea City) and are the only non-English club to have won any of the major English football competitions. They won the FA Cup in 1927, beating Arsenal 2-1 in the final. They finished runners up in the top division of the league in that decade also. They were formed in 1899 as a way for cricket players from Cardiff's Riverside CC to keep in shape during the winter, out of cricket season. They played their first competitive season the following year in the Cardiff & District League.
Cardiff, at the end of the 2008-09 season, left their Ninian Park ground (their home since 1910) and relocated to the new Cardiff City Stadium in the Leckwith area of Cardiff. Cardiff's huge, lively fanbase can be attributed to the fact that they are 'flying the flag' for Wales in an English league. The fans, however, have a long standing, well documented and often violent rivalry with those of fellow Welshmen Swansea City. |
