Coventry City Football Club were founded as Singers FC in 1889 by employees of a Coventry based cycle company, changing their name to Coventry City in 1898. They were voted into the football league in 1919, and have stayed there ever since- they were founding members, in fact, of the Premier League in 1992. Their only major honour came in 1987, winning the FA Cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in, in the opinion of many (particularly Coventry fans), one of the best Wembley FA Cup finals.
Coventry are nicknamed the Sky Blues because their home kit is traditionally that colour. Their mascot is Sky Blue Sam- a sky blue elephant. They moved into the Highfield Road stadium in 1899, remaining there for 106 years, overseeing it become England's first all seater stadium in the 1980s, before making the short transfer to the larger capacity (32,500 seats) Ricoh Arena in August 2005. |
