Liverpool are a Merseyside football club who pride themselves on being England's most successful club in European competition, having won their fifth Champions League/European Cup title in 2005 after a dramatic penalties win over AC Milan.
The history of the club, however, is not without tragedy. The Heysel Stadium disaster made the club infamous throughout Europe- 39 Juventus fans were killed by a collapsing wall as they ran from charging Liverpool fans. The Hillsborough disaster saw the death of 96 Liverpool fans crushed against perimeter fencing. The flames on the sides of the club crest were added to commemorate the victims of the horrible tragedies, which have had huge impacts on European and English football to this day.
The club is famous for its huge, diehard fan base, which holds bitter rivalries with other clubs- the most notable, and fierce, being against Manchester United and Merseyside neighbours Everton. |
