Peterborough United Football Club are a relatively young club, having only been founded in 1934. They were founded to replace the defunct Peterborough and Fletton United. They won their local Midland League six times (including 5 in a row between 1956 and 1960) before being elected into the Football League at the expense of Gateshead FC. They play their home games at the London Road stadium, which holds 14,000 fans, all seated. It was built in 1913 and has been constantly renovated and updated ever since that date.
In the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, Peterborough achieved the rare (but not unheard of) feat of gaining back-to-back promotions, to propel them to the Championship- the second tier of English football. This was only the second time in their history that the club had reached such heady heights. The club were runners up in both League 2 and League 1 in successive seasons to make the considerable jump. |
