Plymouth Argyle are an English professional football club, commonly referred to as Argyle or their nickname, The Pilgrims. The nickname arises from the group of English Separatists that left Plymouth for the New World in 1620- the ship that they left on, the Mayflower, features on the club's badge. The club play in a predominantly green home kit, and are one of only two English league clubs to do so (the other being Yeovil Town).
The club were founded in 1886 as Argyle Football Club, playing several friendlies against local rivals Plymouth United FC. The name 'Argyle' is the subject of much speculation- some believe that it was named after an army regiment with a strong football side, or the Argyle Tavern in Plymouth, where founders and early players could have met. They were founder members of the Football League Third Division in 1920. |
