Scunthorpe United Football Club are an English club from North Lincolnshire. Their nickname is 'The Iron' because of the traditional local industry of the town. The club badge features an iron girder prominently, along with the club colours of claret and blue. Founded in 1899 as Scunthorpe and Lindsey United, they joined the football league in 1950 when the league structure was expanded.
Scunthorpe's purpose built stadium Glanford Park was the first of its kind in the modern era of English league football. The club moved there in 1988 after it became clear that their previous ground, the Old Showground, would need significant financial input to bring it up to new codes introduced after the Bradford Fire disaster. The club played its first season in the second tier of English football for 45 years in 2007-08 after gaining promotion to the Championship. |
