Sheffield Wednesday are one of two clubs based in the Yorkshire city of Sheffield (the other being Sheffield United). They were founded in 1867, making them the fifth oldest club in the English league system, and one of the oldest clubs in the whole world. They played in the Premier League in its inaugural season in 1992, and have in fact spent the majority of their history in England's top flight.
They have been league champions four times, most recently in 1930, and are three-time FA Cup winners. They won the League Cup for the first time in 1991, but this was their first major honour since the 1935 FA Cup. They reached the finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup in 1993, but lost both to Arsenal by the same scoreline (2-1). Their Steel City Derby rivalry with Sheffield United is one of the fiercest in English football. |
