Swansea City are a Welsh football club currently playing in the English football league system. They are one of only two Welsh clubs to be playing in the English leagues, along with Cardiff City, with Wrexham in the Conference (one level below the league system). They were formed in 1912 as Swansea Town (becoming Swansea City in 1970), and joined the football league in 1920. They have been members ever since. The club are nicknamed 'The Swans', for obvious reasons.
Since their formation in 1912, Swansea had played at the Vetch Field in the city centre. in 2005, the club moved to the larger capacity Liberty Stadium (20,500 all seated), which it shares with the Ospreys Rugby Union club. The club's highest ever League finish was sixth in the 1981-82 season. They have played European football in the Cup Winners Cup, by virtue of winning the Welsh Cup (a competition in which they have had great success). |
