West Ham United FC were founded in 1895 as 'Thames Ironworks', giving rise to their nicknames today- The Irons and The Hammers (although the latter may have something to do with the name of the club...). They play at their Boleyn Ground, more commonly known as Upton Park, and have done since 1904. West Ham fans' anthem has been 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles', because of an advert in the 1920s featuring someone who resembled a popular player.
West Ham have won the FA Cup three times in their history - 1964, 1975 and 1980. They were also runners up in the historic first ever FA Cup final to be held at Wembley Stadium, in 1923, at the end of their first season in the top division, losing on that occasion to Bolton Wanderers. They have never won England's top division. Their best finishing league position was 3rd in the 1985-86 league, and their best Premier League performance to date was a 5th place finish in 1999. |
