Wolverhampton Wanderers, far more commonly known by their nickname Wolves, are a West Midlands English football club. They hold the record for longest time playing at one stadium, having been at their Molineux home ground since 1889. They were founded in 1877, and were founder members of the football league in 1888.
Wolves were highly influential in the formation of the European Cup (today known as the Champions League). Having beaten some of Europe's and the world's top sides, such as South Africa, Spartak Moscow and the Hungarian side Honved, the English press declared Wolves the 'Champions of the World'. Interestingly, these continental games were among the first ever to be fully televised. Following this claim, the European Cup competition was established. Following the sacking of former player Stan Cullis, their legendary manager of the time, Wolves have not been able to emulate their world-beating performances. |
